5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Stunning, June 11, 2009
I have been researching televisions for quite some time now and was originally going to go with a Samsung 4 months ago but when I found the 2009 line would be coming out I figured I'd wait and boy am I glad I did. When I first saw some reviews on Cnet I was a bit concerned, even though they listed the 40B7000 as their top choice they stated some cons regarding the viewing angle and some issues they noticed with the LED's being visible sometimes. This made me decide that I would view the screens in person as opposed to just purchasing on Amazon as I intended to do and really didn't think I needed to see in person. Never the less I'm glad I did because any fear I had was immediately irrelevant once I saw the set in person. Needless to say I saw none of the issues mentioned on Cnet and the set blew me away that I couldn't wait any longer and purchased right then! I have had the set for about 2 weeks and I kick myself every time I turn it on, everything looks just AMAZING!! It is the most beautiful TV I have ever seen. My mother and 2 of my friends who were in the market for TV's came over and all of them are purchasing the same set. I plan on getting the 55'' when I move into my new house! There are so many features I haven't even been able to figure out yet. You will not be disappointed with this product. Thank you Samsung!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stuning Picture, July 20, 2009
By Rod (El Paso, TX) - See all my reviews
*UPDATED*

Well I purchased this two weeks ago from Best Buy and I have enjoyed it since then. I have now a better understanding to write a better review.

I like it's ultra slim design and its light weight. I didn't needed more help than little help from my wife to carry the whole package to the second floor. I did it alone to carry off of my minivan and I'm not a wrestler. I did assembled the stand in a few minutes very easily.

This is my first HDTV. I have been following HDTV technology for years but was until now that I was able to purchase it. I have watched a lot of TV's since 5 years ago in every store display with every combination of inputs and I think I can notice when a movie is Blue Ray connected through HDMI or composite video to when a TV set is connected trough other Video inputs and video sources (DVD).

I have my set connected to a Samsung BDP3600 Blue Ray, however I have not purchased any Blue Ray movie yet so I tested with a couple of DVDs and the image is excellent. I can't tell if is the TV or the BDP3600, but I see it like a Blue Ray movie. I can't wait to play a blue ray movie on my set. DVD's look gorgeous. *UPDATE: Computer Animated DVD's look gorgeous. I tried Harry Potter DVD and it is not the same video quality as Shrek II. Blue Ray movies seems very nice as expected, darker scenes seems grainy, I believe that is the ISO sensitivity of the film not an issue of the Blue Ray. If that is true new movies are going to be shotted with HDTV or higher area film, if I'm not wrong, most movies are 35mm film.

HDTV over the air (1080i) looks very nice and is pretty quick to change from HDTV channel to HDTV channel. I have satellite broadcast, however it does not offer HDTV signals :(.

*UPDATE. I have plug ed my USB thumb drive with a racing .mkv file and I was amazed of the quality of video I saw in this highly compressed file (3hrs in a 1.1GB file). All the scenes look very nice with vivid colors and very detailed even the fast moving scenes from on board cameras.

*UPDATE. I would have expected to read my Ethernet disk drive to play this videos, but is not able to connect a network shared drive. The blue ray player is able to do it, however is not able to play .mkv files. So I need to copy them to my thumb drive and play them directly on the TV.

*UPDATE. Infolink is good, but you are not able to select cities from other countries for weather update.

Unless other reviewers say not, mine has buttons, they are touch sensors discrete icons in front of the TV i.e. power button is beneath the SAMSUNG logo.

PROS:
- Excellent Picture
- Slim Design
- Light Weight
- Stylish Design
- Discrete Buttons (some owners might have not notice them)
*UPDATE - Ability to play a lot of audio and video formats including .mkv, video files.

CONS:
The only thing that I have discovered is that Picture in Picture can only be done with an HDMI input and Air. I have not been able to have PIP with Air and the analog A/V input from my satellite nor the satellite with the HDMI input. I have not installed the Ethernet and might a firmware upgrade solve this.

*** UPDATE ***
I did connect the set to my Ethernet, firmware upgrade was done and it didn't solve the PIP issue. There is also no way to swap the images of PIP. Not too much of a concern for me.

I'm pretty happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first HDTV, May 11, 2009
By David Courtney "blixel" (Deltona, FL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I want to start off by warning everyone that this is my first HDTV ever, so I have nothing to compare it to other than regular old school 4:3 CRT televisions.

I bought this TV Friday, May 8th, 2009.

The main thing about this Samsung TV is that the picture is unbelievably rich and vibrant! (So much so that it takes a little getting use to.) The clarity is so good that it is actually distracting to me. (Though I'm sure I'll get use to it.) But as an example, I was re-watching Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl and I couldn't stop noticing the lines on the actors' faces, individual blades of grass, creases in fabric, and all sorts of other subtle details long enough to pay attention to the actual movie! OK - so maybe that is more of a general HDTV thing and has less to do with the Samsung TV? I don't know. Again - this is my first HDTV ever.

The Samsung TV is incredibly thin. This was one of the things that really drew my attention to this TV when I was doing my comparative shopping. Flat panel TV's are an order of magnitude thinner than their larger CRT cousins, but this Samsung TV takes the thinness to a whole new level.

I've read that this particular TV uses less power than standard flat panel TV's. While I'm not a tree-hugging hippie, I do prefer to be a good steward of the planet whenever possible. But more practical is the fact that less power consumption = less heat generated. I live in Florida so I prefer electronics that don't radiate lots of heat.

The integrated speakers are functional, but I can't imagine anyone would spend this much money on a TV and be satisfied with the integrated speakers. I'm not taking points off the review for the relatively lousy speakers because I believe lousy speakers are par for the course with flat panel TV's. (Or TV's in general really. Even CRT TV's have pretty lousy built-in speakers.) If you really want a high quality audio experience, you know you're going to have to use external speakers.

I can't say much about the input options. I bought a Samsung Blu-ray player at the same time I got the TV and I got an HDMI cable to hook up between the two devices. It "just worked." The Samsung TV / Blu-ray player seem to be a good match. When I put in a DVD or Blu-ray disc, the TV turns on automatically and switches to the correct HDMI input. But otherwise I don't have any devices plugged into this TV yet. I don't have cable or satellite or a video game system.

I would suggest that anyone who buys this TV should try to put the TV in a room without any windows or bright lights facing it. I bought this TV for my bedroom and it sits about 12 feet directly in front of my bedroom window. Fortunately the window is on the backside of the house and has a thick blind over it, otherwise I think the reflection from the window would be overwhelming during the day.

The TV is certainly bright and vibrant enough to watch in daylight conditions, that's not the issue. The issue is the amount of reflection on the TV screen. During the day, I can see the reflection from the edge of my window. It's fairly subtle and I can easily address this by buying a decorative curtain to place over my window, but it is something that I think is worth pointing out. If you know you're going to have your TV in front of a big window, it could be a major distraction if you can't cover the window properly.
Pros:
* Contrast almost makes the image look 3D (3,000,000:1 contrast ratio)
* Vibrant colors
* Ultra-Green -- uses almost no power (40% less than an LCD) and uses no mercury in production.
* Very easy setup
* Clean design
* Great remote

Cons:
* Can only take 1 component video connection
* Although I use my receiver for sound, the built-in speaker does not sound great.
* Not really a con but they have an RJ-45 port for a network cable, but don't have wifi -- if it is going to be networkable, wifi is so much easier to set up.

Summary:
Last week my wife and I finally upgraded our Dish Network to HD. We had an 8-year old HD-ready rear projection TV -- and I was crushed to find that the HD didn't look very good at all.

My very-low maintenance wife didn't understand why we needed a new TV, but was nice enough to humor me.

I did some research and we went to Best Buy to check out a TV that Consumer Reports ranked as #2 for LCDs. But right next to this TV was the Samsung UN-46B6000 and there was absolutely no comparison. My wife who was hesitant about even getting a new TV looked at them both and said, "Damn - we have to get this one. I didn't want to get a new TV but if we are going to get one - we have to get this one."

So there you have it - a TV even a reluctant wife realizes is the best one in the store. She now sees the error of her ways and LOVES the new TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars very nice, June 5, 2009

Consumer Reports has not rated this set yet. Their current top rated set is the samsung ln650, which although good, has minor flaws, such as "3-ball effect" (tennis and football), varying shade of green on football fields when comparing line of scrimmage versus either side, and some smudginess.

I see none of that with UN46B8000 that I bought last week. Fast motion is excellent. White is white, black is black, and reds and blues are beautiful. Clarity is excellent. Once in a while I've seen intense yellows and greens where I've wondered if it was an accurate depiction, but I've not made any adjustments yet. But, it's hard to get all these qualities, especially whites, in plasma. I'm not a professional, just my observations based on a few months of shopping.

My opinion is that plasma has lost it's advantage, especially if you consider power consumption. Plasmas only advantage now is price, but that should change over time.

The only problem with the un46b800 I've had is that occasionally the backlight setting jumps up. I think c/net mentioned this. Still, I'm very satisfied with this set.

Samsung UN55B8000 55-Inch 1080p 240Hz LED HDTV-Reviews

Not perfect, but it's the closest thing I've seen so far. Really deserves 4 1/2 stars instead of 5 due to the lack of a couple convenience features missing from the remote, and the limited number of non HDMI inputs. The picture quality, light weight, reduced power use, and thin cabinet are just terrific. The remote takes a couple hours to really bond
with though you can start watching TV and movies pretty quickly without knowing how to make adjustements other than selecting your input source.

Pros:

* Increadible Dynamic Contrast. I feel like other people are in the room with me. Even up close to a few inches away the images is crisp, clear, and lifelike.

* Light weight at only about 65 lbs or so, about 1/3 that of an old 32" TV.

* VGA computer input, 4 HDMI, Audio out, and a couple other type inputs.

*240Hz demo feature lets you display 240Hz on one side and 60Hz regular on the other. There's also multiple modes of 240Hz you can select. Great feature to play with while watching the latest Bond movies.

*2ms response time (sounds good to me)

Cons:

*Only one regular RCA input that is shared with a Component input (you can use either the 3 component inputs jacks~ or just one of them for your video, then use the Left and Right audio). Bottom line is you only have one non-HDMI video Input (not counting the computer VGA input).

*PIP only accessed from tools menu instead of a single button on remote. Swapping PIP image to main image required selecting that source input instead of a single swap button. Can only display TV or Cable image in PIP and not other HDMI input devices.

*Touch of Color is only one blue light at the bottom instead of all around the edges as I expected.

That's the quick review. I'm sure someone will go into more detail soon and I look forward to hearing other takes on this new LED series. I'm very happy with the purchase, especially at 10% or more below the list price.
